Oak Frame for Motorized Enclosure – Intervention on Existing Pergola with Arched Cane Roof
A unique and challenging project, born from a client’s need: transforming a refined iron pergola with arched cane covering into a more sheltered space, without disrupting the harmony of the whole.
Our solution was to insert, within the existing pergola, a custom-built oxidized oak inner frame, designed to house motorized vertical clear vinyl screens—commonly referred to as cristal—meant to protect the area from wind and enhance comfort during the mid-seasons.
This freestanding inner structure, solid yet discreet, was carefully studied both aesthetically and functionally, with a wood finish calibrated to blend with the aged tone of the iron and the architectural character of a historic Tuscan villa with a garden.
The project included:
– on-site surveys and tailored design;
– technical and aesthetic planning for seamless integration;
– fabrication and installation of the oak frame;
– installation of motorized clear vinyl screens with concealed guides;
– extension of the existing iron roof with a side canopy, shaped to follow the original curve and provide added protection in the most exposed area;
– application of a custom-shaped front awning, designed to divert wind-driven rain and complete the sheltering of the entrance.
A bespoke intervention, conceived to improve seasonal usability of the outdoor space without compromising its charm or architectural balance.
